Bad weather can catch even the best drivers off-guard – and especially when travelling in the extreme weather the country has been experiencing over the past few months.

We have already seen the devastation the floods have caused and now Met Eireann is warning that a cold snap is expected to return with frost predicted across the country.

Whether it is snow, frost, black ice, floods or fog that you are dealing with, you must ensure that your car is ready for the challenge.

In extreme weather, you should always ask yourself if your journey is absolutely necessary. If it isn’t, you should consider putting the trip off until things improved.

But, if you have to make that journey, remember, prevention is always the best way to ensure that you arrive at your destination safely.

The best advice from the experts, including the Road Safety Authority (RSA), is to get your vehicle serviced before bad weather strikes to make sure it is safe for winter driving.

The second step is to carry out regular checks yourself on your vehicle. Here are the top six things to check before you drive on winter roads:

  • Top up with anti-freeze and screen wash
  • Check that all lights – including indicators – are working and clean
  • Check your spare wheel is in good condition, is fully inflated and that you know how to change it
  • Keep tyre pressure at the recommended level for your vehicle
  • Check that your tyres have at least 3 millimeters of tread depth
  • Replace your wiper blades as soon as they start to smear; don’t just keep cleaning the windows.

But, listen to the RSA and get your car or van serviced before you head back onto dangerous roads. You can put your vehicle into the care of our trusted and highly-skilled mechanics and technicians here at Connolly Motor Group in Sligo, Ballina or Galway.
