A tough car with a smattering of luxury, the Mercedes-Benz GLC makes every adventure a breeze. Compact in size despite its muscular brawn, it is just at home in the city as it is on country lanes.
At 4.6 metres in length and less than two metres wide, the GLC is neatly compact. It is available as a coupé as well as the SUV, if you want a more executive vibe. You’ll instantly notice the definitive Mercedes-Benz styling at its nose with its expansive grille, assertive headlights and broad air intakes. It has, however, been given a flatter shape that gives it a muscular shape. Protective wheel arches and skid plates at the front and rear further hint at its robust make up. LED daytime running lights are standard so you can easily be spotted on the road, with full LED headlights in every trim apart from the entry-level SE.
A minimalistic design inside keeps the cabin looking smart and fuss-free. Its simplicity makes all controls easy to locate and most of what you need to adjust can be controlled using a single dial. The seven-inch touchscreen displays all of the entertainment and driving assistance tools in an easy to read format right next to the steering wheel in the centre of the dashboard.
Up front, the seats have four-way lumbar adjustment that supports your back. They’re heated in the Sport trim upwards (optional in the SE) and clothed in soft leather upholstery. Automatic climate control ensures all passengers are kept pleasantly warm or cool. The 550-litre boot will swallow a couple of golf bags or a number of suitcases for a trip away. The tailgate opens at the touch of a button so it’s easy to get luggage and sports gear in and out of the boot.
Select the driving style you want through the Dynamic Select with five modes to choose from: Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. The nine-speed automatic transmission is standard and there are gear paddles on the steering wheel that help you to accelerate faster. Thanks to the Start/Stop function, you can save on fuel and enjoy a peaceful rest in traffic and when stopped at lights.
Pick one of three engines: two diesels and one petrol unit. The V6 petrol engine packs the most punch, achieving 0-60mph in less than five seconds. For fuel efficiency, opt for one of the diesels which boast up to 56mpg.
On top of the ABS and ESP, there are a number of advanced safety systems. Curve Dynamic Assist and Crosswind assist counters understeer for a stable drive around corners and in gusty weather. Collision Prevention Assist Plus detects if a collision is imminent and warns you, and then automatically applies the brakes if you fail to do so.
Along with the hands-free phone system and array of music devices, the GLC features convenient tools that make all drives much simpler. A Garmin MAP PILOT navigation system is included from the Sport trim upwards and optional in the SE. It includes 3D views and can be controlled using either your voice or the dial. Thanks to the reversing camera, you can park easily when you reach your destination, saving the paintwork. Choose to add head-up display to get your speed monitor and optional navigation directions projected on the windscreen.
