Now in its fifth generation, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is more polished than ever. It will earn you extra suave points and you’ll enjoy a smooth ride on every commute. Choose any of the ‘e’ models for an electrically powered motor.
It’s a big car with elegant proportions, taking its styling clues from the larger S-Class. Long flowing lines define the E-Class with its elongated bonnet, low roofline and graceful contours. Thanks to its sizeable features at the nose, like the copious air intakes and curved, outsized grille, it has a powerful stance.
The LED headlights have daytime running lights which sit vertically within the frame, give the car sharper, advanced finesse. Twin tailpipes at its rear remind you of its powerful performance. All AMG Line trims come with brake calipers, adding to its athletic guise. There are two body styles on offer in the newest edition: saloon and estate, with a coupé and cabriolet available in the previous version. The estate is more generous with space in the rear and comes with chrome roof rails.
Driving in the E-Class is a relaxing experience. At the end of the long arm rest is the gear knob and controls for the entertainment and climate. Positioned close to your knee, they are comfortably within easy reach. The front seats are heated to relax your muscles and warm you up on cold winter mornings. In the AMG Line trim levels, the Seat Comfort package comes as standard (optional in the other trims) bringing pneumatic, four-way lumbar support adjustment to your back. Leather upholstery throughout means you’re surrounded by luxury. You can choose between 64 colours for the ambient lighting, allowing you to create the mood you want. A wide choice of inserts including metal weave and open-pore ash wood bring a classy finish.
Mercedes-Benz has given the E-Class an extra 65mm in the wheelbase, affording more legroom for passengers in the back. You will all be kept cool with two-zone climate control as standard. The 540-litre boot is plenty big enough to swallow two golf bags and a couple of holdalls so it’s perfect for a weekend away.
Expect a smooth drive in the E-Class. Dynamic Select lets you choose between four driving modes; ECO, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. Agility Control suspension in the SE and AMG Line (not for electric models) absorbs shock from the road, minimising every bump.
Choose between three diesel engines and two petrol powertrains, one of which is powered partly by an electric motor. Mercedes-AMG E 43 4MATIC engine has the quickest acceleration time of less than five seconds, exceeding over 155mph. The diesels are all turbo charged for better fuel-efficiency and power, achieving up to 72mpg on the combined cycle.Active Brake Assist and an Adaptive Brake System help the E-Classto come to a sharp stop. You can choose to add the Lane Tracking package
which has Lane Keep Assist and Blind Spot Detection, acting as an extra pair of eyes on the motorway. A Driver Assist package is also available which has a number of systems to warn you of hazards and adjust your drive if a collision is imminent.
All E-Class models come with the entertainment systems you expect with an endless choice of music at your fingertips. The SE and AMG Line trims (not for electric-motored engines) have a Garmin MAP PILOT navigation system displayed on an 8.4-inch screen with 3D views. COMAND, a system which brings internet access to the car when parked, is standard in the electric-motor models and optional elsewhere. It lets you use hundreds of apps, and provides live traffic updates. An optional 360 camera can be added if you want to be able to slip into tricky parking spaces with ease.
