The Mercedes A-Class is a feat of modern engineering. It brings sporting panache and luxurious elegance to the world of hatchbacks, with an equally as ardent performance to match.
Refined from nose to tail, the A-Class is arresting to look at. Its confident nose features a large diamond grille, marked by the Mercedes-Benz emblem and oversized dramatic headlights. A low-positioned bumper has two front air intakes carved into its frame, making a sporty statement that equals power.
The indicators are integrated into the door mirrors giving it a suave edge, while daytime running lights bring added on-road presence. From the Sport trim upwards, you can opt for LED lights that are even sharper. Choosing the AMG Line or Motorsport Edition brings chrome pins to the grille giving it a striking, flecked look.
The interior feels just as elegant with classy touches like three circular air vents on the central dashboard, and ambient lighting in the foot wells from the Sport trim and up. These trim levels also feature dual-zone Thermotronic air conditioning that will make sure the cabin is kept at your ideal temperature. A long central console that gently slopes from the dashboard has handy compartments for loose change, sunglasses and your phone. If a sporty experience is what you’re craving, go for the AMG Line trim upwards which has sports seats with integrated headrests.
Seven engines are on offer with a choice of three diesels and four petrol units. The A 45 4MATIC petrol powertrain is the fastest, with 475Nm of torque at 2,250rpm. It sprints from 0-60mph in around four seconds. The A 250 petrol options aren’t far behind with 0-60mph times of approximately six seconds and top speeds hitting 149mph.
Driving modes are standard in all but the SE, giving you choice over the feel of every drive with ECO, Comfort, Sport and Individual for the selections. If you want a fun ride, go for the Sport, which reduces the traction, handing the control of the car back to you. All trims get cruise control so you can relax your ankles when driving along the motorway.
An Electronic Stability Control and Active Brake Assist come as standard, helping you slow and stop firmly when you need to. Attention Assist is included to prevent you from losing concentration on long commutes. These features, plus the strength of the shell and the array of airbags, helped the A-Class earn a five-star rating from Euro NCAP.
A reversing camera with parking guides brings a 180° view of the car onto a screen on the dashboard. It helps you to slip into small parking spaces without scraping the paintwork and it comes as standard on all A-Class models. In terms of entertainment, you get all the obvious music gadgets you expect plus Bluetooth and a keypad for making calls while driving. In the SE, these are displayed on a seven-inch touchscreen and every other trim gets an 8-inch version. A Garmin MAP PILOT navigation system is optional and a helpful addition if you plan on travelling far.
