Rio Ferdinand visits Connolly's

Connolly Motor Group was delighted to welcome former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand to our dealerships in Ballina Co Mayo. Rio was in the West of Ireland with his Rio Ferdinand Foundation for a showcase match between youngsters from the southern border counties and Northern Ireland at Sligo Rovers F.C. The Showgrounds for the #BeyondTheBall celebration event.

Our Audi and Volkswagen Ballina dealerships were chosen as Rio and his foundation's form of transport during his visit, and Rio took time out of his busy schedule to visit our showroom, say hi to our staff, and present us with a signed Manchester United Jersey! The event celebrates the foundation's programme alongside the International Fund For Ireland, which aims to unite young people from different communities through their love of the 'beautiful game'.

Rio is a English former professional footballer who played as a centre-back for Manchester United and England, and is now a television pundit for TNT Sports. He played 81 times for the England national team between 1997 and 2011, and was a member of three FIFA World Cup squads.^[4] He is one of the most decorated English footballers of all time, regarded by many as one of England's greatest ever players having won 6 Premier League Titles, 1 Champions League, 4 FA Cups and 2 League Cups.

Set up by Rio Ferdinand in 2012, the Foundation addresses issues of inequality that Rio had experienced in his own life, growing up in Peckham, South London. Supporting and empowering young people from working class communities, tackling racism and inequality, and providing opportunities and pathways to deliver social mobility and realise personal potential were, and remain, the cornerstones of their work.
