Bringing the suave elegance of a classy saloon to the world of roadsters, the Mercedes-Benz SL is fun yet relaxing to drive. Expect to put a smile on people’s faces when you arrive in the extravagant SL.
Looks are especially important in cars built for driving pleasure, something Mercedes-Benz knows well and masters with the SL. It has a svelte body with a more elongated design than its sibling, the SLC. Large front air intakes are built into the bumper and there’s one on either side giving it a sporty look and adding to the aerodynamics. AMG body styling on every model brings chrome details across the body from the grille to the front splitter and tailpipes. The headlights are LED with daytime running lights and extra features such as corning lights, variable light distribution and dynamic range adjustments. Not only do these help you to get a clear view at night, but they protect other drivers from dazzle and make it known where you are on the road.
The panoramic roof is standard, filling the interior with natural light. It folds down and up electronically when travelling at speeds of up 25mph, so you can close it while turning down your street before reaching home. In just 20 seconds it can fold down completely.
The luxury continues inside with a Memory Seat package, ambient lighting and heated seats. These systems mean you can always sink into a warm seat that’s perfectly positioned for you and enjoy the calm mood that the glow of ambient lighting sets. Thanks to the sun-reflecting leather on the seats, you don’t have to worry about them getting hot when the sun beams down. Thermotronic climate control keeps you and a passenger pleasantly cool when the roof is up.
A seven-inch colour screen sits in the centre of the dashboard, displaying the entertainment and driving assistance tools. No buttons are higher than the steering wheel and there’s a single dial to control most of the systems placed in line with your thigh next to the gear knob.
Active Body Control automatically adapts the suspension to suit the driving conditions, keeping the drive steady and smooth at all times. The entry level has a nine-speed transmission, while the two upgraded trims have a seven-speed sports transmission with a Race Start function. This system allows you to change a number of functions to get your ideal driving set-up. Dynamic Select is standard, so you can choose how sporty or calm you want every drive to feel.
A choice of four petrol engines power the SL. 0-60mph times are all less than five seconds and every powertrain can take you to speeds in excess of 155mph. The Mercedes-AMG SL 65 is the fastest, sprinting from 0-60mph in around four seconds thanks to the impressive 1,000Nm of torque at 2,300rpm.
Roll-over bars with a crash sensor automatically raise in a collision to keep you and your passenger protected. Active Brake Assist helps you to come to stop when you need to while the ESP with Curve Dynamic Assist helps to prevent skidding when turning around bends. Add the Driving Assistance package if you want the added ease and safety of Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Distance Pilot and Pre-Safe Brake.
A car that’s fun to drive deserves plenty of entertainment features which is exactly what you get in the SL. The COMAND online system gives you internet access allowing you to use smartphone apps via the seven-inch colour display. It also has the ability to read out messages recovered by a connected smartphone and there’s inbuilt satellite navigation. Passengers can even insert a DVD and watch it on the screen. Eight speakers are dotted about the cabin to ensure whatever you play can be easily heard when the roof is down. A reversing camera is optional and a handy addition if you fear scratching the paintwork when parking.
